My friend Phillip, plus Susana,(Phillip’s wife) and I traveled to a village called Lower Gweru which is outside the city of Gweru the 3rd largest city in Zimbabwe. I opened the scripture from Philippians Ch 4v6-9 and started to encourage the community about making our request known to God through prayer. I also spoke about how we get the peace of God which surpasses all understanding and this is what I shared, “Paul said those things which you have both learned, and received, and heard and see in me, do; and the God of peace shall be with you.”
After sharing the good news, we prayed with few people and started to give the kids the stationery we brought them. There are quite a number of orphan kids, less privileged and vulnerable. We had these gifts for the kids; stationary for writing, books, pencils, ballpoints (pens), plastic covers, khaki covers or wrappers for their school books to protect them and look nice etc. This is the little we could get to help these kids hoping that this will be a good way of empowering them through Education as we know that “Knowledge is Power”. The best way to prepare a child’s future is through Education (mind empowerment).
There were about 30 kids who received their school supplies. Their guardians were so happy, as they were expressing their gratitude saying, “Some of the kids were staying at home because they had no books to write on and we are so thankful to God for using you in such a way”.
It’s the kind of gospel we have preached so loud in this rural community such that most of the residents were just blown away by this.
We are praying and hoping to carry forth with this vision of supplying school supplies to the kids at the beginning of every school term. This is a practical way we can help them to build their future besides sharing God’s Word and discipleship. Many of these kids don’t have parents or their parents left the country in search of employment and now Grandparents are the ones taking care of these kids. Some of the kids don’t have any parents alive at all. Where they stay, there are no adults; its kids raising kids, no adults to guide them so they are vulnerable to the bad guys in the community, especially the girls. We are trying to bring the Good News in this community so that there can be role models, who will help others emotionally and spiritually in our absence.
We were so glad to give to this community, and love these kids. I was just thinking of James 1:27:
Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.
Through God’s grace we want this project to grow from this level to another. Keep us in prayers.
